What’s Happening at Good Shepherd This Week
Employment Opportunity Good Shepherd is looking to hire a custodian in a part time capacity. This is a 10-12 hour time commitment each week. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this position, please reach out to Micah.
Did you Hear? Mary Schuster and Nick Restino got married last week! Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Restino, and thanks to all who helped to make their day so special.
Potluck Today is the first of the month, which means it’s time for another potluck! This month’s theme will be Asian Foods. Please consider bringing your favorite Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dishes to share, but come and enjoy lunch even if you don’t!
Potlucks are a great way to introduce friends and family to the community of Good Shepherd, so please do invite them to join us!
Youth Group Lake Outing The Carlton family has graciously invited the youth group, their families, and anyone who volunteered with the youth group this year to their cottage on August 31st from 3-8pm. The day will include swimming, grilling, and (possibly) a campfire!
Please contact Jon Groves for more info and to RSVP.
Book Study of Generation to Generation Stephanie and I (Anne) are excited about our forthcoming book group on Edwin Friedman’s Generation to Generation. Matt and I spent most of our time camping going back through the material and remembering all the helpful tools Friedman offers for life in the church and the family. Matt is planning to come to the group, as he is able, and help us out.
The first week Steph and I will introduce some of the concepts in the first chapter (though not all—please don’t be intimidated by the technical detail, so much comes clearer after those first two introductory chapters) and talk about how the class will work. The first meeting will be on August 13 at 4, on zoom (we’ll send the link to those who ask for it—please email Anne or Steph, or text or call them). The classes will be recorded for those who won’t be able to make it. Looking forward to seeing you on zoom!
Church Picnic This year’s church picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 11. The last church picnic was held in 2019, and we’d really love to make the first one since then special.
We hope to put together a committee to help plan and execute the picnic. If you are interested in being part of that process, please contact Micah or Steph.
More information to come as we get closer to the date!
Thursday Evening Bible Study The Thursday evening bible study will be moving into a study of the book of Psalms. This study happens on Thursdays right after the Shepherd’s Bowl meal, and is a great way to dive deep into bible study in an small and comfortable group. For more information, call the church office, or speak with Mr. Terry Ray.
Sunday Worship and Holy Eucharist Both the 8am and the 10:30 services are meeting in person.
The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.
The 10:30am service You can download a PDF copy of the service bulletin here. One of the joys of having a fully digital bulletin is that we are free to use color! You’ll find that some of the artwork and many of the directions are in full color.
You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. You can give online through Breeze or you can text a donation through Breeze at 607-882-6551. Good Shepherd also has a PayPal account. If you choose to give via PayPal you can avoid fees by paying directly from your bank. Be sure to uncheck the box that says, “paying for goods and services” at the bottom or PayPal will charge Good Shepherd a fee. As always, thank you for your great generosity and kind support.
The lectionary readings for this week are: Genesis 15:1-6, Psalm 33:10-21, Hebrews 11:1-16, and Luke 12:32-40.
Shepherd’s Bowl Community Dinner A Community Dinner is served every Thursday evening at 5:30pm in the parish hall, a fresh tasty meal served by cheerful volunteers. This is a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for church and community members to come and enjoy, regardless of income. Terry Ray leads a beginners Bible study at 6:00 and anyone is welcome to attend. Please find our page on Facebook, Shepherd’s Bowl Free Community Meal, and follow, like and share posts, and invite friends. It all helps! As we try to regrow our attendance, we especially invite church members to come and eat and help welcome visitors. We are also in need of volunteers. If you’d like to join a team, can be available as a sub, or are even interested in being a cook, contact Martha Rice or Mary Schuster.
Catching Up…
Last Sunday’s Sermon Last week Bishop Dave Bena was with us and preached on Luke 12:13-21. We don’t have a copy of his sermon available yet, but it should be posted soon. You can find previous sermons here.

You can catch that class here.
You can find previous Christian Education classes here.
Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday Morning we continued our series on The Parables of Christ. You can watch here. We’ll move through the parables chronologically, beginning with the earliest recorded ones and finishing off with his last parables in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. This week we looked at the parables of the good Samaritan and the friend in need. Miss a class? You can find all of the previous classes in this series and previous series here.
Thursday Evening Beginner’s Bible Study The Thursday evening study meets in person at 6pm in the classroom area. Mr. Terry Ray is leading the class through the book of Psalms. This is a great place to connect with others and learn more about what God has to say to us through his word.
Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study The Men’s bible study meets at 6am each Friday morning, and they are currently studying the book of 2 Peter.
Women’s Bible Study This study is meeting at 4:30 pm on Friday afternoons in the Parish Hall. Anne Kennedy is leading and they are beginning the book of Proverbs.
