What’s Happening at Good Shepherd This Week
Coffee Hour As many of you have noticed, we have resumed coffee hour in a very slow manner. First, we brought back coffee during the Christian Ed hour, then we reintroduced Potlucks. Now, we’re ready to roll out the next phase of reintroduction…breakfast! If you’ve been skipping Christian Ed in favor of getting a good breakfast, your worries are over! We’ll be serving fresh fruit, boiled eggs, and granola bars, along with our normal offering of strong black coffee.
Speaking of coffee…next month we’ll be having the annual coffee competition (where we decide which coffee will be the official coffee of Good Shepherd gatherings) during the potluck.
Potluck The next potluck will on March 6th, and will be themed Food Around the World, so be sure to dig out your favorite international recipes, and come prepared to eat! Please bring a dish, but stay and eat even if you don’t! We still don’t have a coffee hour crew in place, so please be sure to clean up after yourself and your family.
Returning Palms Did you know that Anglican tradition is to burn the palms from Palm Sunday for the Ash Wednesday service? If you would like to bring your palms from last year, there will be a basket at the usher’s table for collection leading up to Ash Wednesday.
Shrove Tuesday Shrove Tuesday (known in some countries as ‘Pancake Day’ or ‘Fat Tuesday’) is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. This year it will be on March 1, from 5-7pm. ‘Shrove’ comes from the Latin word ‘shrive’, and means ‘absolution’. It is thought that the tradition started when families would eat all of the fatty, rich foods in the house so as not to be tempted during the penitent season of Lent.
Good Shepherd hosts a free pancake and sausage supper to mark the day, which is followed by a short ceremony at 7pm in which all of the palm fronds from Palm Sunday of the previous year are burned to produce the ashes that are used for Ash Wednesday. If you would like to help, please contact Steph Warner or Carrie Moorhead-Nelson.
Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is a day of reflection in the Christian tradition. On this day that begins the Lenten season, Christians all over the world come together and have ashes imposed upon their foreheads as a reminder that we are all sinners and to “remember that we are made of dust, and to dust we shall return”.
The ashes are imposed in the shape of a cross to remind us that Christ bore the weight of our sins on the cross and ultimately defeated death to offer salvation to all who would come to him. The Ash Wednesday services this year are on March 2nd at 7am and 6pm.
ADOLW Annual Synod Each year, much of the diocese comes together for a three-day meeting where worship happens, many interesting sermons are delivered, a choral evensong service is held, and new deacons and priests are ordained. This year’s synod will be held in Souderton, PA, on May 5-7 and I think there might be a familiar face at Good Shepherd being ordained this year.
If you’d like any information about synod, or if you’d like to go to synod, but would need transportation, please contact the office, as many of the folks required to go will have room to carpool.
Great Litany During the Lenten Season, beginning on March 4th, each Friday immediately following morning prayer, Anne will stay on the call and pray through the Great Litany. If you would like to join her, please join the zoom call by 7:40am.
Streaming During Holy Week Because of the heavy workload for all the staff during Holy Week we’ve made the difficult decision not to livestream the services since it involves a great deal of time and labor. Please join us in person as we observe the Passion of Jesus–his crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection.
Zoom Morning Prayer This service normally meets online by zoom at 7am Monday through Friday. The liturgy and readings are available each day at www.dailyoffice2019.com. Join the parish email list and look for a daily email invitation in your inbox.
Sunday Worship and Holy Eucharist Both the 8am and the 10:30 services are meeting in person.
The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked to wear masks and remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.
The 10:30am service You can download the bulletin, including the scripture readings here. One of the joys of having a fully digital bulletin is that we are free to use color! You’ll find that some of the artwork and many of the directions are in full color. You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. You can give online through Breeze or you can text a donation through Breeze at 607-882-6551. Good Shepherd also has a PayPal account. If you choose to give via PayPal you can avoid fees by paying directly from your bank. Be sure to uncheck the box that says, “paying for goods and services” at the bottom or PayPal will charge Good Shepherd a fee. As always, thank you for your great generosity and kind support.
The lectionary readings for this week are: Exodus 34:29-35, Psalm 99, Philippians 3:17-21, and Luke 9:28-36.
