What’s Happening at Good Shepherd
Annual Meeting The 144th Good Shepherd Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 12:30pm in the Parish Hall. Please make every effort to attend.
Tyler Van Fossen began serving last week as Good Shepherd’s new pastoral assistant. He brings many gifts to the table; a sharp mind, excellent admin skills, an eagerness to serve, a love for Christ and the scriptures, and love for the church. As with Jerry and Ife, Tyler will be open to meet with you should you desire to do so. Just call the church office for an appointment.
An Offer of Prayer The prayer team prays for the needs of the church on a weekly basis. If you have a specific request (Praise or intercession) please fill out a card and place it in the “prayer box” by the bulletin boards in the parish hall. All prayers are kept confidential.
Ongoing Ministries
Good Shepherd Youth Group Each Sunday evening, the youth of Good Shepherd meet for fellowship and worship. Any young person between the ages of 12 and 18 are welcome to attend. Led by Good Shepherd member Tyler VanFossen. For more information, contact the Good Shepherd office at (607)723-8032.
Next month, we’ll be having our first official service project at Arrowhead Bible Camp from February 9-11. We will be trained on how to set tables, clean toilets, sweep floors, prep food, run dishes through a machine, fold laundry, and many other hands-on things as well. In between our times of serving we will play games, study the bible, pray, talk, and just hang out.
If you’d like to know how to help or be involved, please contact Tyler VanFossen.
Bread and Wine If you are interested in joining a group of ladies for a monthly supper and discussion, please contact Liz Hull. The group will be beginning a new study on a book called Money, Possessions and Eternity, by Randy Alford, and the next meeting will be (tonight) January 13th.
Health and Wellness Our bodies are “the tents” that the Lord has given us to house our souls. Begin to take care of the body which God Has given you. Check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight every Sunday in the Parish Hall 9-10AM. Please see Dolly Shaller or Carmen Swoffer-Penna for more details.
Good Shepherd Member Food Pantry God has a plan for all of us, for our church and our congregation. Part of that plan includes helping those that are less fortunate than ourselves by keeping our member food pantry stocked at all times. Those members that have trouble putting food on the table appreciate the kindness of those who help them.
Items needed: canned soups and stews, canned meats and tuna, rice (in 1 lb bags), plain or crunchy peanut butter, pasta, macaroni and noodles, bottled juice or juice packs, jello, rice or tapioca puddings, various pasta sauces, salad dressings or anything else you’d like to bring.
*Please do not bring in any flour or sugar, as they attract pests
Last Week
Last Week’s Sermon was called ‘The Walls of Jericho‘. It was based on Hebrews 11:30-31. You can download or listen to it here.
Mission Group Discussion Questions
Read Hebrews 11:30-31 and use appropriate sections from Joshua 2 and 6 for context.
1) Who told Joshua how to bring down the walls of Jericho?
- How do we know that God himself gave these instructions?
- Why did God give these instructions for bringing down the walls rather than a more conventional military
tactic?
- What commands given to believers by God through scripture seem unusual or out of the ordinary from what
culture determines to be normal?
2) Why did the actions of Joshua and the Israelites concerning Jericho demonstrate the faith they had in God?
- What actions and decisions have you made in the last few weeks that demonstrate the faith you have in
Christ?
- How are these actions and decisions contrary to what culture determines to be normal? Why then do you do
them?
3) What characteristic of Rahab and her family made them worthy to be saved when all the rest of Jericho was
destroyed? Why were they saved?
- What similarities exist between Rahab and all believers?
- Why does God choose to save those who can’t save themselves?
- Who is glorified in the redemption of sinners?

Preventing Grace Podcast Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast? They talk about everything from church polity to rustic breads. In this week’s episode, ‘Christmas, the Last Jedi, and the Male Gaze’, Matt and Anne Kennedy argue about Christmas celebrations, review the Last Jedi, and discuss the so-called “Male Gaze”.
You can catch up on all of the older podcast episodes here.
This Week
This Week in Christian Ed This Sunday we will begin a new series: Christian Basic Training. How is your prayer life? Are you reading your bible? What do you think about the church and the sacraments? What does it mean to be a Christian contractor or engineer or postal worker? Learning basic Christian spiritual discipline is crucial to growing and maturing in Christ. This Sunday I will discuss prayer…what it is, what Jesus says about it, the particularly Anglican way of praying, and why prayer, in general, is important. Class starts at 9:15 am, hope to see you there.
This Sunday’s Sermon will be based on Hebrews 11:32-40, the faith of Rahab and the fall of Jericho.
And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
Team Ephesians is working on the altar this Sunday.
The readings for this week are 1 Samuel 3:1-20 and Hebrews 11:32-40.
Karen B. will be serving on the altar guild this Sunday.
Shepherd’s Bowl Team 1 is serving this week with Carmen Swoffer-Penna.
