Good Shepherd Weekly Update, January 15, 2021

January 12, 2021Stephanie WarnerAudio

What’s Happening at Good Shepherd This Week

Annual Meeting Directly after the 10:30 service this Sunday, Good Shepherd will be holding the 147th Annual Meeting.  Please make every effort to attend.  If you are not able to attend in person, there will be an option to attend and vote on issues via Zoom.  If you would like to attend the meeting but didn’t receive the email titled ‘Good Shepherd Weekly Update, January 15, 2021’, please contact the office.

Although the meeting is open to all attenders of Good Shepherd, only active members are eligible to vote at annual meetings.  To be an active member of Good Shepherd, you must physically live in the local vicinity of Good Shepherd, have attended Good Shepherd most Sundays for at least three months (either physically or online), must be a bible believing, baptized Christian, and have tithed of your time, money, and talents.  Only people that are known to attend Good Shepherd will be permitted entrance to the meeting.

Please feel free to bring a lunch for yourself and your family and take a few moments to eat in the parish hall before the meeting begins.

The 2021 Church Directory is hot off the presses and ready to be distributed!  You can pick one up at the Annual Meeting, or the church office.

If you are unable to pick one up, please feel free to contact the office and we will get one mailed out to you.

Sunday Morning Worship

Both the 8am Service and the 10:30 are meeting in person.

The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked to wear masks and remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.

The 10:30am service is currently observing ‘restaurant-style’ masking guidelines which means that while seated masks are optional. We ask that those attending wear masks when entering, leaving, or walking from one place to the other (unless you are unable due to health reasons) and practice social distancing of at least six feet between your family and the next grouping. Once seated, masks are optional.

You can download the bulletin, including the scripture readings here. One of the joys of having a fully digital bulletin is that we are free to use color! You’ll find that some of the artwork and many of the directions are in full color. You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. If you would like to send your tithe digitally, these are the best ways to do so. You can still send your tithe in by traditional mail as well.

The 10:30 service is also available via livestream. You can access the stream at this link.  The stream begins every Sunday at 10:20am but the service does not start until 10:30am.  If you do not have a Facebook account, you will still be able to view all of the services, classes, and studies.

Christian Education begins at 9:15am and will continue to be live-streamed, however the class is open to the public with the same guidelines as the 10:30 service.  It will be will be available at this link.

This Sunday we will continue our Christian Classics study of the first century anonymous work, “The Didache”. You can read it here. It is very brief. The Didache consists primarily of moral teachings, instructions about Baptism and Communion, and several sections on church order and discipline. It provides a fascinating glimpse into Christian lives and the church during the first century.

Catching Up…

Last Sunday’s Sermon Did you miss last Sunday’s sermon?  Last week, Matt preached on Matthew 2:13-23.  You can catch the sermon, “Out of Egypt” here.

Christian Education If you missed Christian Ed last Sunday, Matt continued our current series on the Christian Classics by discussing the first century anonymous work, “The Didache”. You can read it here. It is very brief. The Didache consists primarily of moral teachings, instructions about Baptism and Communion, and several sections on church order and discipline. It provides a fascinating glimpse into Christian lives and the church during the first century.  You can watch it here.

Preventing Grace Podcast Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast?  They talk about everything from church polity to rustic breads. This week, Matt and Anne what seems to be a new religion formed around the President. You can listen here.

You can listen to past podcast episodes here.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday morning, we continued our study of the minor prophets in the book of Hosea in chapter 8. Throughout these chapters, God reveals his people’s sinfulness and the depth of their enslavement which also reveals the depth of his mercy and love and his commitment to save. You can watch that class here.

Thursday Evening Bible Study This Thursday evening, we continued our study of Ecclesiastes in chapter 7, beginning with verse 15. Here’s an excerpt:

“15 In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing. 16 Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17 Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them…”

Why would Solomon say that it is not good to be “overly righteous”? We discuss that and more in this study.  You can watch that class here.

Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study The Men’s bible study has resumed meeting at 6am each Friday morning.
