What’s Happening at Good Shepherd
Weather Concerns We are expecting a heavy snow storm this Sunday. Matt will be at Good Shepherd during the normal Sunday worship hours to conduct services and offer communion. If you are unable to attend, we are working on setting up a livestream for the sermon. Please watch your inbox for more information on Saturday evening.
Evening Worship Service Good Shepherd will have a monthly informal Sunday evening service beginning January 20th, at 6pm. Coffee/tea and snack at 5.30pm in the Fellowship Hall. This is a great opportunity to invite friends/family/neighbors who are considering coming to church, wondering about faith, to a peaceful, reflective gathering with lovely worship songs, scripture readings, prayer, and time to simply be in the presence of God together. Contact Anne T. or the Good Shepherd office, with any questions, thoughts, etc.
Minister’s Calendar Thank you all for being so patient as we finished solidifying the minister’s calendar. You can find the new copy on the usher’s table near the front of the sanctuary.
Good Shepherd Annual Meeting The 145th Good Shepherd Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at 12:30pm in the Parish Hall. Please make every effort to attend.
Potluck Given that the Annual meeting is landing on potluck week, we’ve decided not to have a potluck, but will instead provide a large pot of soup and some crusty bread for everyone to enjoy.
Mobile Food Pantry The next Broome County Mobile Food Pantry food distribution will be Wednesday, January 23rd, from 10-11am. All are welcome, please bring containers to take away any goods that you receive.
Upcoming Baptism Please join Vishal and Diti Patel in celebrating the baptism of baby Avi on January 27th during the 10:30 service.
The Soup and Stew Cookoff was scheduled to be held on February 3rd, but due to the annual meeting, we’ve been asked to push that back to the March potluck date. The new date will be March 3rd.

Good Shepherd Youth Group Youth Group meets on Sunday night from 6:00 – 7:30pm at Good Shepherd. All youth between the ages of 12-18 are welcome to join as the youth group continues to study the book of Romans. Youth Group dates to remember:
- Feb. 8-10 – Youth Group Overnight Missions Trip to Arrowhead. (working/serving, study, games, tubing, yummy food, and fun times!)
Bread and Wine If you are interested in joining a group of ladies for a monthly supper and discussion, please contact Liz Hull. The group is currently studying a book called Money, Possessions and Eternity, by Randy Alcorn. The next meeting will be in February, at the Hull home.
Good Shepherd Food Pantry Day by day, week by week, month by month if we can keep our member food pantry well stocked during these times, it would be a great obedience to God by feeding the hungry, and a magnificent gift to those who make use of it. Why? Because an empty pantry, no matter the time of year, is of no use to anyone.
Items needed: canned meats and tuna, pasta sauce, shelf stable milk, coffee and tea, peanut butter and jelly, canned soups and stews, canned fruits and juices, condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, relish, salad dressings, etc.), rice in 1 lb. packages, one box meals, canned vegetables (other than beans), toilet tissue, paper towels, napkins, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant (men’s and women’s) and anything else you’d like to bring.
Last Week
Last Week in Christian Ed This Sunday in Christian Ed we looked at Matthew’s account of Jesus’ the visitation of the Magi. You can listen to or download the class by following this link.
Last Week’s Sermon was called ‘Unless My Father Draws Him’ and was based on John 6:41-48. It can be listened to or downloaded here.
Preventing Grace Podcast Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast? They talk about everything from church polity to rustic breads. This week’s episode is called, ‘Love, Anglican Style’. In this weeks episode, Anne and Matt talk about the Episcopal Church meltdown, the disciplinary action taken by Presiding Bishop Curry against Bishop Love for doing something biblical, and the Anglican Communion envoy to the Vatican who thinks we need to be set free from the idea that Jesus rose bodily from the dead.
You can catch up on all of the older podcast episodes here.
Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday morning’s class was based on Leviticus 19.
This Tuesday morning we discussed Leviticus 19 which contains more laws regarding how we approach God and how we treat our neighbors, especially the poor and dispossessed. While the law, when we believe it to be the way of justification before God, becomes a curse. Once justified by faith, we see and taste the goodness and wisdom of God’s law, how wonderfully it reflects his own character, and how well, if followed, our lives would be ordered.

This Week
This Sunday’s Sermon will be based on John 6:49-59.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
