What’s Happening at Good Shepherd This Week
Summer Changes Over the summer, many of the regular ministries are on hiatus. Among them are choir, youth group, mission groups, morning prayer, and children’s Sunday school.
There is a summer program in place for the kids. Please contact Anna Dreher for more information. For more information about choir, contact Michael Berman, and for info on any of the other ministries, please contact Jon Groves.
BBQ and Pie Competition Results
This year we only had one entry for the BBQ category, Karen Berman’s Dad’s Smoked Chicken, which was excellent! Thanks Karen, and congratulations!
The pie category was small, but a stiff competition, none the less! The 1st place pie went to Katie Whaley with a Strawberry Cream Pie, 2nd place was Laura Radman with a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and 3rd place went to Angel Groves Apple Pie. Thanks to all who participated, and to our judges!
We’ll be skipping the potluck in July, as it lands on the holiday weekend, so our next potluck will be the Church Picnic in August. Please keep an eye on the bulletin for more information in the coming weeks.
Kennedy Modified Sabbatical As many of you may remember, the Kennedy family is supposed to take a sabbatical every seven years. So far, in their twenty years of service at Good Shepherd, they have always graciously denied taking that time. Last year, the vestry and the congregation insisted that they take their sabbatical this year, and began setting aside money to make that possible.
While they will still be in town for part of the time, they will be out of the country for most of June and July. We have some great supply priests, and even a bishop coming to fill in, and many familiar faces will be preaching and teaching in their absence. The Kennedy family is so grateful and humbled that Good Shepherd is allowing them time to study, write, and recharge.
Sunday Worship and Holy Eucharist Both the 8am and the 10:30 services are meeting in person.
The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.
The 10:30am service You can download a PDF copy of the service bulletin here. One of the joys of having a fully digital bulletin is that we are free to use color! You’ll find that some of the artwork and many of the directions are in full color.
You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. You can give online through Breeze or you can text a donation through Breeze at 607-882-6551. Good Shepherd also has a PayPal account. If you choose to give via PayPal you can avoid fees by paying directly from your bank. Be sure to uncheck the box that says, “paying for goods and services” at the bottom or PayPal will charge Good Shepherd a fee. As always, thank you for your great generosity and kind support.
The lectionary readings for this week are: Isaiah 6:1-7, Psalm 29, Revelation 4:1-11, and John 16:5-15.
Shepherd’s Bowl Community Dinner A Community Dinner is served every Thursday evening at 5:30pm in the parish hall, a fresh tasty meal served by cheerful volunteers. This is a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for church and community members to come and enjoy, regardless of income. Terry Ray leads a beginners Bible study at 6:00 and anyone is welcome to attend. Please find our page on Facebook, Shepherd’s Bowl Free Community Meal, and follow, like and share posts, and invite friends. It all helps! As we try to regrow our attendance, we especially invite church members to come and eat and help welcome visitors. We are also in need of volunteers. If you’d like to join a team, can be available as a sub, or are even interested in being a cook, contact Martha Rice or Mary Schuster.
Catching Up…
Last Sunday’s Sermon Last week Matt preached on Acts 1:1-11. You can find ‘And They Were All Filled With the Holy Spirit’ here. You can find previous sermons here.
Christian Education If you missed Christian Ed on Sunday, last Sunday was Pentecost, one of the major Christian feast days of the year so we suspended our discussion of the Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self and instead talked about what happened on Pentecost Day in Jerusalem. In this class, we discussed Peter’s sermon that same day, recorded in the same chapter, the first sermon ever preached by a believer indwelt by God’s Spirit. You can read it in Acts 2:14-41. You can watch that class here. You can find previous classes here.
Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday Morning we continued our series on The Parables of Christ. You can watch here. We’ll move through the parables chronologically, beginning with the earliest recorded ones and finishing off with his last parables in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. Miss a class? You can find all of the previous classes in this series and previous series here.
Thursday Evening Beginner’s Bible Study The Thursday evening study meets in person at 6pm in the classroom area. Mr. Terry Ray is leading the class through the book of Esther. This is a great place to connect with others and learn more about what God has to say to us through his word.
Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study The Men’s bible study meets at 6am each Friday morning, and they are currently studying the book of 1 Peter.
Women’s Bible Study This study is meeting at 4:30 pm on Friday afternoons in the Parish Hall. Anne Kennedy is leading and they just finished a study on the book of James. Children are welcome—as in, we hope to have some childcare available. If you’d like to join by zoom, please join the church email list and look for a link in the weekly update email.
This study is on hiatus for the months of June and July.
