What’s Happening at Good Shepherd This Week
Shepherd’s Bowl Community Dinner A Community Dinner is served every Thursday evening at 5:30pm in the parish hall, a fresh tasty meal served by cheerful volunteers. This is a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for church and community members to come and enjoy, regardless of income. Terry Ray leads a beginners Bible study at 6:00 and anyone is welcome to attend. Please find our page on Facebook, Shepherd’s Bowl Free Community Meal, and follow, like and share posts, and invite friends. It all helps! As we try to regrow our attendance, we especially invite church members to come and eat and help welcome visitors. We are also in need of volunteers. If you’d like to join a team, can be available as a sub, or are even interested in being a cook, contact Martha Rice or Mary Schuster.
Beginner Vegetable Gardening Class Jenn Fowler, a newer member at Good Shepherd, is certified as a Master Food Preserver through Cornell Cooperative Extension and has offered to teach two courses for anyone interested, as we face uncertain times within the economic and food supply systems. A light lunch will be provided at each class. The first class was last Saturday and was packed full of helpful and useful information on how to practically think about food storage for your family in a spirit of wisdom. Lunch was served as part of the class, and every part of the menu was made, at least in part, with food that was part of a long term food storage system.
The second class will be held on June 4th at 10am. It will be about two and a half hours long, and will be focused on beginning vegetable gardening. Jenn will present information on soil health, how to plan a garden, choosing what to grow, different gardening styles, and much more.
Youth Group End of Year Party Next Sunday, June 5th will be the last meeting of Youth Group for the summer. Jon will be meeting with the kids at Rec. Park for games and pizza at 5:30pm. Choir End of Year The last choir practice of this season will be on June 1. The choir’s last Sunday will be June 5th. Choir will resume in September. If you would like to be involved in the music ministry in any way, please contact Michael Berman, music director. Potluck Next Sunday is the first of the month, so it’s time for another potluck! This month we’ll be having two competitions: BBQ and Pies. The BBQ categories will be:
- Pork
- Poultry
- Beef
- Veggies.
The pie categories will be:
- fruit
- cream
- icebox.
Please limit your entries to one per competition, although you’re welcome to bring as much food as you’d like, and have all submissions labeled and in the kitchen before the 10:30 service to allow the organizers time to get the judges plates prepared.
Kennedy Modified Sabbatical As many of you may remember, the Kennedy family is supposed to take a sabbatical break every seven years. So far, in their twenty years of service at Good Shepherd, they have always graciously denied taking that time. Last year, the vestry and the congregation insisted that they take their sabbatical this year, and began setting aside money to make that possible.
While they will still be in town for part of the time, they will be out of the country for most of June and July. We have some great supply priests, and even a bishop coming to fill in, and many familiar faces will be preaching and teaching in their absence. The Kennedy family is so grateful and humbled that Good Shepherd is allowing them time to study, write, and recharge.
Zoom Morning Prayer This service normally meets online by zoom at 7am Monday through Friday. The liturgy and readings are available each day at www.dailyoffice2019.com. Join the parish email list and look for a daily email invitation in your inbox.
Sunday Worship and Holy Eucharist Both the 8am and the 10:30 services are meeting in person.
The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.
The 10:30am service You can download a PDF copy of the service bulletin here. One of the joys of having a fully digital bulletin is that we are free to use color! You’ll find that some of the artwork and many of the directions are in full color. You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. You can give online through Breeze or you can text a donation through Breeze at 607-882-6551. Good Shepherd also has a PayPal account. If you choose to give via PayPal you can avoid fees by paying directly from your bank. Be sure to uncheck the box that says, “paying for goods and services” at the bottom or PayPal will charge Good Shepherd a fee. As always, thank you for your great generosity and kind support. The lectionary readings for this week are: Acts 1:1-11, Psalm 110:1-5, Ephesians 1:15-23 , and Luke 24:44-53.
