What’s Happening at Good Shepherd
Congratulations! Chris and Jaime E. welcomed daughter Ophelia Jane on September 4th at 8:49pm. She weighed 8lbs and 5oz at birth.
As is the custom at Good Shepherd, we’ve set up a TakeThemAMeal page. If you have time and the ability, please consider blessing Good Shepherd’s newest parents with a meal. You can find the sign up sheet at this link: https://takethemameal.com/meals.php?t=EWFZ2027&welcome=1
Congratulations Chris and Jaime! We’re all very excited to get to know the newest member of the Good Shepherd family!
An Invitation Sunday, September 22 at 7 p.m: A Musical Evening with Brio! Vocal Ensemble and Friends. Brio! opens their 2019-2020 season with a brief selection of madrigals and sacred music, as well as instrumental music for piano, organ, guitar, recorders and flute performed by guest artists from around the Southern Tier. Light refreshments to follow. St. Andrew’s Anglican Church; 400 West Wendell Street, Endicott, NY.
Church Picnic We are trying something new this year for the church picnic! Please join us after the 10:30am service on Sept 22nd for a potluck lunch in the church yard and parking area. Pulled Pork, Chicken in Alabama white sauce, and hot dogs will be supplied by Good Shepherd. If you’d like some other meat to be grilled, please feel free to bring your own. Mike Mrva of Smokey Legend Barbecue, will be smoking and grilling here on the premises, and lunch will be served outside after the Sunday service. This is a great time to invite friends or family to church who can then share a meal with our church family after the service. Although we are not going to advertise this as a community outreach event, there will be enough food to share with our neighbors who are drawn over to the gathering on that Sunday.
Please take some time to sign-up to help serve or bring a side for Sept 22nd by looking over the sign-up sheet in the parish hall.
InterVarsity Visit As the school year begins, InterVarsity college campus ministry conducts a Church Tour, letting new students experience worship at several local churches. On September 22nd, the church tour will be visiting Good Shepherd. Please make sure to greet and help the students feel welcome during their visit. Please contact Joe Osgood for more information or to offer help with transportation.
Scheduling Reminder If you need to make an appointment with Pastor Matt, please be sure to contact Stephanie directly at gs.binghamton@gmail.com.
Often when people come to speak with Matt after the service on Sunday, he’s already been working for over nine hours, and doesn’t always remember to put it into the calendar. This can cause double bookings or forgotten appointments. Please keep in mind that the office is closed on Mondays and Fridays, but you can always leave a message. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Last Week
Last Week’s Sermon given by Tyler Van Fossen, and was called ‘I Am the Door’. It was based on John 10:1-9. It can be listened to or downloaded here.
Preventing Grace Podcast Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast? They talk about everything from church polity to rustic breads. In this week’s podcast, ‘Dealing with Church Conflicts’, Anne and Matt discuss how to approach personal conflicts in the church and what to do with Matthew 18.
You can catch up on all of the older podcast episodes here.
Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday we discussed Mark 4. Jesus tells a number of parables to a large crowd…but doesn’t explain their meaning to anyone but his disciples. Why would he do that? The parables mostly deal with agriculture and circumstances familiar to first-century Galileans. They understand about seeds and sowers and mustard seeds…but what the parables have to do with God’s kingdom remains hidden to them. We discussed the purpose of parables and their meaning. You can watch the class at this link or in the window below.

This Week
This Sunday’s Sermon will be based on John 10:11-18, and will be given by The Reverend Matthew Kennedy.
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
