What’s Happening at Good Shepherd
New Members/Inquirers Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest in the New Members/Inquirers class which will begin on the last Sunday of this month after the 10:30am service.
If you are one of those who have let Matt or Steph know that you want to take the class, you should receive an email this coming week with more information. It’s not too late to join up so if you’ve not yet done so, please contact Matt or Steph to let them know.
Coffee Hour Update After a well-received competition and several hot debates, the new coffee for this year is Coffee A (Tim Hortons), which won by a whopping 4 votes! Thank you to all who participated!
In the next few weeks, coffee hour will continue to experience some change as we work to create a time that functions well for both the congregation, and the people volunteering to help with set up, service, and clean up. If you’d like to know how you can help, please see Steph Warner for more info.
Missionary Updates
September Lunch with a Missionary This month our focus will be on the pre-school in Kuinde that Good Shepherd helps to fund. We are fortunate to have Bob and Joyce Carlson, Anne’s parents, back in town and able to attend the meeting. Recently, Bob, Joyce, Anne Kennedy, and Anna and Sarah Dreher got a chance to visit the preschool and see the good work that God is doing within the children and the community there. This Sunday, we’ll get a chance to hear about how things are going, and what plans are in place for the coming year.
The meeting will be held in the green youth room immediately following the 10:30 service. A light lunch will be served for all who attend. Please RSVP to Bill Freund to ensure that there will be enough space and food for everyone that would like to take part in the meeting.
InterVarsity Campus Tour Each year InterVarsity takes the new students on a tour of several local churches. This year Good Shepherd will host these students on September 23rd. The potluck which would normally be held on October 7th will be held on September 23rd instead, and the theme will be International Foods. Come enjoy lunch and welcome the new students! Please bring a dish to pass, if you’re able.
Transportation Many of the students will be needing drivers who can bring them to and from church. If you have room in your car and it wouldn’t be too out of your way on your drive to church, please see Joe Osgood after the service or email him at jwosgood4@gmail.com for more details.
CHE Nicaragua
Dear friends of CHE,
I will be writing more in the coming weeks, but just wanted to ask everyone to pray for a safe, uninterrupted journey to Costa Rica for the CHE national team, and the area leaders.
This trip, to attend a Development Associates International training, has been planned for some time.
This will not only be a good training with a Costa Rican trainer who is a staunch friend of the CHE Association, but will be a time of refreshment for everyone after the conditions which have prevailed in Nicaragua since April 19th.
Thank you!
Anne Thompson

Good Shepherd Food Pantry When I go shopping for the pantry, I think of how it would be if I didn’t have the means to provide food for my family. What would I do? Where would I go for help? The first place that I would think of is my church, and if they didn’t have a pantry, I would go to someplace that did. Keeping our pantry well stocked with appealing and nutritious foods helps many people keep their dignity and provide for their family without having to seek other avenues for help.
Needs: peanut butter and jelly, canned meats and tuna, macaroni and cheese, soups and stews, one box meals, canned fruits and juices, tea bags, coffee singles, sugar-free drink mixes, cereals (hot or cold) and anything else you’d like to bring.
Last Week
Last Week’s Sermon was called ‘Whoever Believes in the Son Has Eternal Life‘, and was based on John 3:31-36. It can be listened to or downloaded here.
Preventing Grace Podcast Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast? They talk about everything from church polity to rustic breads. In this week’s episode, ‘The Lord Laid a Word on Our Hearts Just for You‘ Matt and Anne discuss, again, the subjective practice of “listening to the voice of God in your heart” and letting that voice determine everything…and how the practice has broken marriages, divided churches, and ruined lives. More cheerfully we also discuss why we are not yet able to talk about the Social Justice statement and Anne’s disobedience to Matt’s commands.
You can catch up on all of the older podcast episodes here.
Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday morning’s class was based on Leviticus 9.
After their ordination, Aaron and his sons offer their first sacrifices as priests. When they finish, God appeared in his glory and sent fire from his presence to consume the sacrifices. This revealed that God was pleased with their offerings and confirmed their priesthood. After Jesus’ offered his body on the cross, God raised him from the dead in glory. And forty days later the glory of the Lord appeared on the Mount of Olives and Jesus Ascended in the clouds to the heavenly tabernacle where he was seated at the right hand of the father. This revealed that Jesus is the Great High Priest and that God is forever pleased with his one sacrifice once offered and that now, because of his work, his people are at rest with him, seated with him in glory.

This Week
This Sunday’s Sermon will be based on John 4:1-14.
Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.
A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
