What’s Happening at Good Shepherd
Acolyte and Crucifer Practice there will be an Acolyte and Crucifer practice immediately following the 10:30 service. If your child is (or wants to be) an acolyte or crucifer, please make sure that they attend the practice. It will be held at the front of the sanctuary.
A Message from Anne Kennedy~
I am so grateful that so many of you have said you are free to meet at noon (for lunch!) on Saturday, September 16 to hear Gary Leber talk about his work at the Pregnancy Resource Center in Vestal. He is planning a great outline for us and I look forward to hearing of concrete ways we can support his work. I would love it if you could text me (262-0170) or email me to RSVP as I plan for lunch. If you end up being able to come at the last minute and can’t let me know that’s Completely Fine, but I would like to plan as closely as possible. We’ll meet at the church in the parish hall. So excited that this is really happening!
School Supply Giveaway Thank you Thanks so much to all who helped make our School Supply Giveaway and FREE Barbecue a great success! We praise God for all who came and for the appreciation they expressed! Several said that they would like to attend Good Shepherd! Please keep these families in your prayers and pray for continued guidance as we seek to reach out to our neighbors!
Mission Group Update Mission group questions will resume for the week of September 11. I hope to have all groups back up and running as soon as possible after Labor Day. I have told Stephanie Warner that group meeting days, times, and locations are the same as last year.
If you have not done so yet, contact your host and arrange to resume meeting in the next couple weeks.
Shriver Baby Shower
The ladies of Good Shepherd are all cordially invited to a baby shower for Janell Shriver and her precious baby girl on Saturday, September 23rd at 3pm at Good Shepherd. Please RSVP to Kit Donovan by September 15th.
They are registered at Babies-r-Us and Baby List (babylist.com). If it would be fun for you, please consider bringing your favorite children’s book (new or used) in lieu of a card! Let’s Shower them with love!
Water Please take time to offer a bottle of cool water to a passerby or a basketball player! If you spend any time at COGS, you will notice folks just outside our doors. Make that small effort to touch them as you offer a bottle of water in Christ’s name. The water bottles with Christ’s message are in the fridge.
An Offer of Prayer The prayer team prays for the needs of the church on a weekly basis. If you have a specific request (Praise or intercession) please fill out a card and place it in the “prayer box” by the bulletin boards in the parish hall. All prayers are kept confidential.
Mission’s Plea Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis today – 18.8 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance. If you’d like to learn more, please visit TearFund.org, the site that Barnabas Aid is recommending as a reputable avenue of giving.
Prayer Request Please be in prayer for a CHE worker and her family in Haiti – Dina, Enoch, and baby Andres, and for Pastor Chico’s (Darling’s husband, CHE Nicaragua) family in the DR, as everyone copes with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Right now, we are praying for safety.
Mission’s Update Kit Donovan has served as Missions’ Coordinator for the last year or so and has done a superb job. But now being a mom and teaching Sunday school along with other pursuits has made it necessary for her to step aside from that role. Thank you Kit for your service for the Gospel and to the church.
Bill Freund has agreed to be our new Missions Coordinator, a role he helped to create and in which he has served ably in the past. I look forward to working with him to serve our missionaries and in considering how Good Shepherd can best promote the Gospel around the world. I am grateful for both Kit’s work on the committee and for Bill’s willingness to serve.
Ongoing Ministries
Bread and Wine If you are interested in joining a group of moms for a monthly supper and discussion of women in the bible, please contact Liz Hull.
Health and Wellness Our bodies are “the tents” that the Lord has given us to house our souls. Begin to take care of the body which God Has given you. Check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight every Sunday in the Parish Hall 9-10AM. Please see Dolly Shaller or Carmen Swoffer-Penna for more details.
Member Food Pantry
If you have looked in our Member Food pantry lately, you may have noticed that things are somewhat out of order. There was a small accident a couple of weeks ago, and a shelf got broken. Until it gets fixed, it will remain a bit disorganized. Don’t be afraid to take food from it though as it is still open to church members.
Please consider bringing what you want and can afford to give, as everything is appreciated.
Last Week
Last Week in Christian Ed Because we had visiting students, we took a break from our ongoing series, “Race, Sex, and Life” and did another Q and A session, answering questions that students generally ask. We started off with: how do we know the bible is true? Is it okay to date non-Christians? How should Christians view anxiety and depression? Is it okay to listen to secular music?
Last Week’s Sermon was based on Hebrews 10:24-25, and was called ‘Toward Love and Good Works’. It can be listened to or downloaded here.
This Week
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Preventing Grace Podcast Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast? They talk about everything from church polity to rustic breads. In this week’s episode, ‘Arguing About The Nashville Statement’, Matt and Anne argue with each other about the Nashville Statement, the Danvers Statement, the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and other stuff.
You can catch up on all of the older podcast episodes here.
